Rian’s Day at Legoland

Rian was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma in his left hand on the 21st March 2023 (Rian was actually away At EuroDisney with his uncle and aunt on holiday, the trip had been a birthday present from them when I found out).

On his return had a PET scan, chest x-ray and biopsy to establish stage and whether it had metastasized. Was at stage 2 and fortunately hadn’t metastasized. A central line was put in on the 3rd April 2023 and treatment, which was 9 cycles of IVA, started 5th April 2023. On the 16th May 2023 I got a call from his consultant saying that in order to have a good chance they needed to amputate 3 fingers and a large part of his hand, we were just heartbroken…….and asked for a second opinion. The second opinion re-enforced the need for amputation.

The amputation took place 8th June 2023 at BCH.

Approximately 5 weeks on,  13th July 2023, at Rian’s appointment, we were told that the pathology report was back and the report indicated that the whole tumour hadn’t been removed as there weren’t clear margins on the amputated part and a second more radical amputation was needed.

We sought a second opinion but the outcome was the same, amputation to mid forearm was needed. The second amputation took place 3rd August 2023, again at BCH.

Rian finished the 9 cycles of IVA on the 10th October 2023.

17th October ’23: Rian rang the end of treatment bell.

RHYS were so pleased to be able to send Rian and his family on a fantastic day out at Legoland.
